Having had a decade of experience working in a variety of different industries — events, media, retail and food to name a few — I can honestly say that the events industry is by far the most enjoyable to work in. This doesn’t mean that the others are devoid of fun, but it makes sense that the purpose of many events is enjoyment. Whether it is a birthday, trade show, or workshops, the purpose of an event is usually to raise awareness and increase interest.
For those who like to enjoy their jobs (I can’t fathom that someone wouldn’t!), working in a field that’s centred on enjoyment contributes a huge chunk towards job satisfaction. While many people may find themselves in well-paying jobs, often they experience a void that financial compensation cannot fill. You may have experienced how slow a working day goes if you have absolutely no interest in what you are doing, compared to working on something you actually enjoy. The difference is like night and day.
The events industry itself is inherently geared towards extroverts. Extroverts thrive in this environment and often become the most successful ones in the industry. However, this is not always the case. If you enjoy talking to others and networking, working in this industry could be for you. On an average day, you will communicate with many people who come together to make an event work. From organising the crew who sets up the venues to being the point of contact for the performers and attendees, working in the events industry will have you meeting people from all different walks of life, people who enjoy what they do.
While I have enjoyed working in other industries – my old summer job as a soccer field painter was oddly satisfying – the adrenaline when working towards the opening of a big event such a Christmas lights show or a wedding can’t be beaten in my opinion. The focus and work ethic from everyone involved becomes clear and so does the camaraderie among colleagues.
In events, you are often on your feet, seeing different venues and setups and meeting different people. Variety is the spice of life, as they say. While you may do the same setup at multiple venues, the organisation and setup is never the same, and this is why it will keep you on your toes. No matter how difficult the work gets, it will always be interesting.
For you night owls, once events such as parties and general celebrations get into swing, that is often the time for you to let your hair down and enjoy it, too. These times offer opportunities for friendships and networks to be built quickly, allowing you to have fun and build your network simultaneously. That’s not something that is common in many other industries.
